Pencil sketch looking towards Sacramento from the west; river in foreground, sailing ships anchored along shore; buildings visible along bank.
Oil painting by George A. Frost, based on Baker's drawing, is in CSL's framed picture collection.
In July 1849, Benjamin T. Martin was living in Sacramento. He had George Baker, an artist who was stopping with him, draw a pencil sketch of the city. Mr. Martin returned to his native state (Chelsea, Mass.) and years later had Geo. A. Frost, an artist of Cambridge, Mass. make the oil painting from the sketch.
