Description
This manuscript fully describes the medical process to perform a cesarean if the mother died in childbirth and gives instructions to baptize the baby immediately after his or her birth. The manuscript emphasizes the importance of having a written description of this process given that “the spiritual and physical life of the creature is of utmost importance” and surgeons are not always available. These medical instructions were created in 1803 under the directive of the Real Colegio de San Carlos, Madrid´s College of Medicine. They reached the California missions since the King had commanded to send this information to the Spanish colonies.
