Description
Photograph of a view of Engine 2-26 and a crowd of onlookers at the recreation of the driving of the final spike on Southern Pacific's Los Angeles-San Francisco line at Lang Station in Soledad Canyon, September 5, 1926. The train pulled by Engine 2-26 sits at the right centerground of the image, facing another train on the same tracks, presumably pulled by Engine 38. The smokestack of the left train emits a cloud of smoke or steam. Onlookers stand on both sides of the tracks, while a few are beginning to cross from the near side of the tracks to the far side. Trees fill the background. Picture file card reads "Recreation of the driving of the final spike on the Los Angeles-San Francisco link of the Southern Pacific railroad".
