Portrait of Juan Pacifico Ontiveros and his wife, Martina Maria Ozuma. Ontiveros was the man from whom the Anaheim pioneers bought the land on which the city was built. These 50 men of German ancestry chose an 1165 acre tract, 28 miles southeast of Los Angeles, paying Ontiveros $2 an acre. The 50 shareholders formed the Los Angeles Vineyard Society, and in 1858 by vote the name "Anaheim" was chosen.
