Claudette Colbert (1903-1996), born in France and raised in New York City, was an Academy Award-winning film and theater actress noted for performances in screwball comedies as well as dramatic roles. She began her career in Broadway in 1925, signed a film contract with Paramount Pictures in 1929, and by 1938 she had become the highest paid actress in Hollywood, with a salary of $426,924. Colbert won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1934 for her role in "It Happened One Night"; in 1935 she received a second Academy Award nomination for her role in "Private Worlds"; she remained active until the late 1980's. After suffering a series of strokes in 1993,Claudette Colbert died in Barbados on July 30, 1996 at the age of 92.
