Description
Scrapbook compiled in 1962 by Dean A. Lewis (K6KI) regarding his reflections of the beginnings of radio. Includes narratiive text by Lewis and photographs. Covers time period 1913 to about 1936. Includes: 1) Dedication on ARRL letterhead: "To my mother and father who dreamed with me, these few pages are dedicated..." dated December 7, 1962, Berkeley, California 2) Dedication on ARRL letterhead: "To my loving wife, Hazel, for the love and understanding she has shown...Also to Sydney Fass (Syd) W6NZ for his patient but persistent effort to get us active again. September 19, 1961 marks a new phase in our amateur radio experience." 3) Foreward on ARRL letterhead: "This is a picture and word story of a boyhood dream come true. It started in 1912 when young boy of sixteen in High School was told of the wonders of wireless by a classmate, Henry Reuther...the desire came to build a wireless station in proportion to the dreams which continued. Station 1ZL was the result." 4) Original letter from Lewis, dated February 9, 1913, 28 Williams Street, Northampton, Mass., addressed to Wireless Operators U.S. Naval Station, Colon, Panama, "Here is a msg that I copied from you at 11:25 Saturday night." Verified by Chief Electrician in charge. 5) Page from the Spark-Gap Times, April 1964, a reprint of QST, August 1916, featuring Lewis in "Who's Who in Amateur Wireless." 6) License to Radio Operator, Amateur Second Grade, awarded to Dean Anderson Lewis, 22 December 1922, Detroit, Michigan. 7) Award from The American Radio Relay League, Inc., to Harry J. Murphy operator of W1CPG for his radio handling during the 1936 floor at Northampton 8) Reprint of The Story of Howard Seefred W6EA in Spark-Gap Times, February 1964 9) Introduction on ARRL letterhead, December 7, 1962, "The pictures on the following pages represent the QSL cards of the original spark days. The collection covers the period from 1913 to the start of World War I. Station 1ZL was closed down at the start of the war and never reopened..." 10) Ad for the De Forest Ultraudion Detector from DeForest Radio Telephone & Telegraph Company (badly water damaged) 11) Tribute to Hiram Percy Maxim on ARRL letterhead 12) "In retrospect" on ARRL letterhead: "This album is, by no means, an attempt to go back and live in the past..." 13) Member's Correspondence on ARRL letterhead: "1399 Tamarisk Rd., Palm Springs, Calif. Feb 12th, 1963. Dear Dean: You have done the Old Timers a favor by gatherine these photos together, and they are certainly nostalgic!... Fred J. Elser"
