Description
Photograph of Nino Majel, a San Juaneno Mission Indian boy, standing beside a carillon wheel at Mission San Juan Capistrano, California, ca.1905. Twelve benediction bells are attached to the rim of the wheel resembling the steering wheel of a ship. They date from the earliest mission times and originally stood in Father Junipero Serra's adobe church of 1777. They were used whenever bells were needed in the services. The wall of one of the mission buildings is behind the boy.
