Article by Charles Handy on what challenges tomorrow's future leaders will face, and possible solutions to those challenges. Handy identifies three key challenges leaders of tomorrow will face, namely, the ability to scan the horizon and detect signs of danger before others and perceive hidden opportunities; the implications of having half as many workers employed, paid twice as much, producing three times as much; and, how managers will have to rely upon reason, enthusiasm, and respect to get things done and direct subordinates, rather than rules, orders, and commands. Handy proceeds to suggest and elaborate on three ideas that should be learned by new managers approaching the aforementioned challenges, specifically, accelerating their learning curves to keep up with new changes in management, practicing being unreasonable, and starting to trust people.
