Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Jane El Farra to Los Angeles from Missouri in 1956 with her mother. Jane's husband was from the Gaza strip (Khanyunis) and came to the U.S. crica 1956 to attend school in Texas. He later came to Los Angeles in 1958 and attended medical school at UCLA. They were married in 1959 and lived in West LA, Westchester, Garden Grove, Hollywood, and Los Feliz. Children and special guests at the Islamic Foundation of Southern California (later the Islamic Center of Southern California), located at St. Andrews Place and 8th Street in Los Angeles. With the children are the imam Dr. Muh?sin El-Bialy (center, with beard) and Sheikh Salem Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, Kuwaiti ambassdor to the United States (to the left of Dr. El-Bialy).
