Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
The term "Missionary Baptist" originated in the early 1800s during the rise of the modern missions movement, which was a movement among Baptists (as well as other Christian denominations) to organize para-church institutions for the promotion and funding of evangelism, Bible and literature publication, schools, charitable and social work, and other religious causes. This movement created extensive controversy among Baptists, drawing harsh criticism from those who considered these new institutions subversive of traditional Baptist polity. Those who opposed the innovations became known as anti-missions, and those advocating them as missionary Baptists. Many of the "missionary Baptist" churches and associations eventually adopted the epithet "missionary" into their official names, and, what started as a descriptive term became a new religious denomination - Missionary Baptists. However, the name never became universally used among the advocates of the missionary institution.
View of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1300 E. 50th Street and Hooper Avenue. It shows a large white church with several arched openings that lead to the main entrance, and an equally large tower above it. Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church was founded on May 12, 1892 and was originally located at 118 1/2 San Pedro Street; it moved to its current location (pictured) in 1936-37. Verso on photograph states that prior to becoming Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, the building was formerly the South Los Angeles Brethren Church. In 1992, then-President George H.W. Bush paid a visit to Mt. Zion Church, which is located in the heart of the Watts section of Los Angeles, and met with Pastor, Rev. E. V. Hill in the days immediately following the Los Angeles Riots. Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, which is a part of the National Council of Churches. Photograph dated May 2004.
