"Rev Mr Stevenson and Mr Sinclair at Karatina Market". External view of Reverend Stevenson and Mr Sinclair at marketplace outside of Tumutumu. Tumutumu was established in 1908 by Rev. Henry Scott and Dr. John Arthur and is situated in the Central Highlands of Kenya, 130km north of Nairobi. The mission was set up as a clinic but soon expanded to include a school and church serving the Kikuyu population indigenous to the region. Arthur Ruffelle Barlow (1888-1965), the nephew of David Clement Ruffelle Scott (1853-1907) and co-editor of the first Kikuyu – English Dictionary, was the first resident missionary at Tumutumu. The mission trained carpenters and masons as a quarry was located nearby.
