Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
In the early years of the pueblo, clergy from La Plaza Church would bless livestock to encourage health and productivity. Starting in 1930, when Olvera Street opened, the event was updated to include companion animals as well. The current tradition welcomes all animals to receive a blessing.
On Holy Saturday (the Saturday preceding Easter), pets are led by their owners past the Bishop who is officiating the annual "Blessing of the Animals" event on Olvera Street. The raised stage where the Bishop, priests, and altar boys are gathered is decorated for the Easter season with lilies and bunny piñatas. Young musicians, members of Estudiantina Californiana, are seen together under the Bear Flag banner (left).
