Charles Handy article on lack of trust and forgiveness in business organizations and its effect on employee loyalty. Handy asserts that, in modern organizations, where an employee cannot expect to work a lifetime at, and be loyal to, one firm, the idea of having overseers and enforcers to make sure staff are operating as they should and following procedure creates a sense of disconnect and restriction in the workers' attitude. To counter this tendency, Handy recommends that employers provide their staff with more freedom and the opportunity to make mistakes, the staff knowing that, in most cases, they would be forgiven.
