Title supplied by cataloger. El Retiro School for Girls was a boarding school for girls who were wards of the Los Angeles County court system. It opened in 1919 and closed in 1961. The school was located at Polk Street and Borden Avenue, now a part of the Sylmar Recreation Center. Photograph article dated February 10, 1961 partially reads, "Soon North Valley residents will be able to see what's behind the 12-foot high fence at 13161 Borden Ave., Sylmar. But by the time it comes down, El Retiro School for girls who are wards of the Los Angeles County Juvenile Court will have moved out. During the week of Feb. 13 Director Dorothy Kirby, her staff and the 33 girls who are now at the institution will move to the new Las Palmas facility in East Los Angeles. And the 40-year-old El Retiro school will be closed to become a park for the Sylmar area."; See images #00142949 through #00142951 for all photos in this series.
