Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
Rolland Joseph 'Speedy' Curtis was born in Louisiana in 1922. After serving three years in the Marines during World War II, he and his wife, Gloria, relocated from New Orleans to Los Angeles in 1946. Curtis served four years with the Los Angeles Police Department, but resigned from the force in order to pursue both a Bachelor's and Master's degree from USC. He later became involved in city politics, as an associate of Sam Yorty, and later a field deputy to City Council members Billy Mills and Tom Bradley. He was briefly director of the Model Cities program in 1973. Rolland J. Curtis died in his home in 1979, the victim of a homicide. An affordable housing complex on Exposition Blvd. near Vermont Ave. was named in his honor in 1981, along with a nearby street and park.; Los Angeles High School is the oldest public high school in the Southern California Region, located in the Mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles. Construction of Los Angeles' first public high school began on July 19, 1872, on what was then known as Poundcake Hill. The schoolhouse was completed at a cost of $20,000 in 1873. In 1887, the decision was made to move the high school building to Sand Street; later in 1890, construction began on a new red brick schoolhouse on Fort Moore Hill; this new location atop a hill was completed in 1891 and Los Angeles High School moved in. In 1917, the school moved to its current location on Olympic Boulevard, and Rimpau. Some notable alumni of Los Angeles High School include: Anne Baxter, Scotty Beckett, Fletcher Bowron, Ray Bradbury, Charles Bukowski, John P. Cassidy, Gary Conway, Mike Evans, Robert Farrwell, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Horton, Willis Lamb, Piper Laurie, Marilyn McCoo, Charles Richter, George Takei, Mel Torme, and Rosalind Wiener Wyman, among many, many others.
An unidentified woman who is dressed in a white skirt suit and white pill hat, poses for a photo with City Council Member John Cassidy, as she accepts a resolution on behalf of the Los Angeles High School Alumni Association. The resolution partially reads, "City of Los Angeles, State of California, Resolution WHEREAS, on Saturday June 3, 1965, the members of the Los Angeles High School Alumni Association are celebrating with a Homecoming Dinner on the school campus the 92nd Anniversary of their beloved Alma Mater; ...BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Council does hereby extend its birthday greetings and felicitations to Los Angeles High School on its 92nd Anniversary and expresses the hope that it will continue to flourish in the years to come; that we as a community may be further enriched by the product of its halls of learning." Curiously enough, Councilman Cassidy is an alumni, as he also attended Los Angeles High School. Photograph dated May 27, 1965.
