Description
The first local high school built north of the American River was a first in many ways, the result of a need for a school district to educate the far-flung school-age children in the area combined with the practical need for a civic center to bring the community together. A bond issue in the early 1930s raised $150,000 for the project, later supplemented by a grant from the Public Works Administration, the first such building program in the state. The first classes were held in rented or makeshift structures, known to students as “the chicken coops”, and the lesson rooms remained in place until the large swimming pool and auditorium were built. The campus slowly took shape thanks in part to the efforts of the Public Works Administration and the growth of the U. S. Army Air Repair Depot, known later as McClellan, who supplied support, volunteers and students. The adobe structure that houses the Grant Union High School Museum is one of the original structures on campus dating back before World War II. During the War the campus schooled students and service men in advanced fields that led directly to the establishment of a separate educational facility known as American River College, still very much a part of Sacramento’s educational system.
