Description
Black and white lantern slide featuring Mrs Lily Ruskin, sitting with two Congolese small girls in European dress in front of a building, possibly a mission house. Lily Ruskin was the wife of Edward Algernon Ruskin. Edward Algernon Ruskin was educated at Harley College and Cliff College. He first went to the Congo on mission in 1894, and joined the mission station at at Bongandanga. On his first visit, he met and married Lily, with whom he was to return to the Congo eight times. Around 1902, Lily contracted the potentially deadly sleeping sickness, but recovered in Europe and returned to the Congo in 1907. Lily and her husband were noted for their hard work to translate Congo languages. They produced a translation of the New Testament into Lomongo and also mastered Ileko, producing written material for their mission work in both languages. This slide comes from a collection generated by missionaries working for the Congo Balolo Mission, a mission begun in 1889 under the supervision of the East London Training Institute for Home and Foreign Missions that developed into the interdenominational evangelical mission Regions Beyond Missionary Union after 1900.
