Image of a firefighter's exempt membership certificate from the Owego Fire Department of Owego, New York, made out in manuscript to C. G. Carter of the Ahwaga Hose Company and dated October 1896, with surrounding vignettes of fire equipment including a hose carriage; a manual fire engine labeled "1862"; a hook and ladder truck with hand buckets labeled "Defiance"; a steam fire engine; two fire hydrants; and a bottom image of an eye-level landscape view of the Tioga County Courthouse building in Owego with a gazebo, trees, and park around it; the certificate has an embossed gold seal of the Tioga County Fire Department. Date span based on history of building in image and date certificate issued to recipient; the Tioga County Courthouse was built in 1871-1873 and the original gazebo was built in 1883. "F.M. Baker & Co. Owego, N.Y."--text, bottom center margin. "This is to certify that C. G. Carter has been a member of the Owego Fire Department for Five years and is entitled to all the privileges of an exempt Fireman. E.M. Crandell Chief Eng. [?] Maloney Sec'y Dep.t.
