View showing part of the crowd outside St. Vibiana's today waiting to glimpse the solemn processional of vested church dignitaries. Inside, in a ceremony whose origin goes back to antiquity, the new bishop was consecrated by Archbishop John J. Cantwell of the Los Angeles Diocese. McGucken, a priest and auxiliary bishop for many years in Los Angeles, went on to serve as the fifth Archbishop of San Francisco from 1962 to 1977. Photo dated: March 19, 1941.
