Description
A bride, a second woman, and a little girl prepare for an autumn wedding as they model their French fashions for the October, 1866 edition of Moniteur de la Mode. The bride wears a white gown with a very full bell skirt. The bodice has a vertical band of lace applique down the center front. A narrow pleated ruffle edges the yoke, and two bands of round trim, like a string of beads, borders the jewel neckline. The sleeves are narrow but not snug, and are edged with a narrow band of pleating above the wrist, and a plain rolled hem. An overskirt is gathered into two swags, one at the knee, one at the hip, in an asymmetrical drape. Small round bunches of white flowers and green leaves adorn the caught up swag, with one at the knee and two at the hip. Each bouquet has a hanging lace strip below, and three more bouquet and lace motifs are arranged on the skirt below the swag on the hip. The lace has a rosette pattern and the bottom end is curved. Two more matching bouquets adorn the bodice, one at the yoke and one at the waist. The bride wears a head covering of a similar bouquet of small white flowers and greenery and a very long transparent white veil. She wears white gloves and shoes. The woman on the right wears a long powder blue dress with the princess line cut ; no waist seam, and the gown cut in long sections from neck to hem. The bodice has a small white pointed collar tied with a medium blue bow with tasseled ends. More tassels also decorate the shoulders. The sleeves are long and narrow. Decorative banding of medium blue in intertwined lines adorn the cuffs, the yoke, and two long lines down the front sides of the skirt. One shorter band is visible at the back of the skirt as well, and a single scalloped band trims the hem. She wears yellow gloves, long gold drop earrings, and a white flat bonnet trimmed with a wreath of roses and greenery, tied under her hair in back with a wide white ribbon. The young girl on the left holds her doll who is dressed in white with a green underskirt and sash. The girl wears a short full skirted violet dress with black dots. Four bands of narrow black ribbon trim the skirt and two bands trim the cuffs. A black jacket or mantelet, or possibly the bodice with a peplum is black with black dots, covers here shoulders, waist, and hips. She wears black shoes and stockings , and a dark gray flat hat trimmed with a thin violet ribbon. The three ladies stand in a well-appointed room with white wall panels and draperies, intarsia furniture, a covered decorative pot, and a diamond patterned carpet.
