Photograph caption dated August 30, 1989 reads, "Father Mike Kennedy of the Southern California Ecumenical Council led a prayer service as part of a demonstration at the Salvadoran Consulate yesterday protesting a "penal code reform" law that would limit freedom of speech in El Salvador. Clergy members from several denominations dressed in black and carried a coffin to symbolize the death of civil freedoms."
