Description
Photograph of a panoramic view of Hollywood taken from Lookout mountain, ca. 1906. The residential buildings of the town can be seen in the distance, beyond a hilly terrain covered in sedgegrass which appears in the foreground. At center, a large hill stands, inscribed with what appear to be roads. To the far left, a one-story rancher-style home is visible situated on the hilly terrain, closer to the foreground than the rest of the homes. Farther right, approaching the center hill, more houses can be seen to either side of a line of telephone poles. Many of the houses in this area are two-storied. A wide road cuts in vertically from the foreground just to the left of the hill. A collection of three more homes stand to its left side in the foreground. Beyond the left side of the center hill, flat-roofed institutional-style buildings which appear to be made of brick are visible occupying corners on plots of cleared ground. Several buildings with peaked roofs, however, are still visible hugging the side of the hill. As the image continues to the right of the hill, the residential-style area resumes surrounding the intersection of a broad, paved street coming vertically out of the foreground and a much narrower horizontal street. What appear to be orchards and cleared plots are visible farther back, surrounding the narrower street. Larger trees obscure much of the hills in the foreground still farther right, while the residential area continues in the distance, the homes occupying larger plots of property as they advance towards the horizon. The roof-peak of a home featuring two chimneys can be seen in the extreme foreground in this section of the image. Finally, as the image approaches the end of its frame, what appears to be a large flagpole surround by a circular fence can be seen among curved rows of young trees or bushes. Small, country-style roads can be seen wending through the widely dispersed homes on the outskirts of the central residential area. What appear to be oil fields are visible along the horizon to the right of the center hill.
