Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Description
Yoshiro Shimoda’s parents came to the U.S. from Japan in the early 1900s. Yoshiro was born in Seattle in 1925 and moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1936. His parents ran a hotel in L.A. and later owned a grocery. Yoshiro, his parents, brother, and two sisters were held at Heart Mountain internment camp in Wyoming during World War 2. In 1944, Yoshiro graduated from high school at Heart Mountain and entered the U.S. army one week later. He died in L.A. in 2009 at the age of 84.
