Photograph caption dated June 16, 1954 reads "Valuable charges. Mrs. Aletta Kaefer, who started raising parakeets as a hobby, now finds it a full-time job. Her charges consume a ton of seed every six months. Raising parakeets was started by Japanese, who used them for wedding gifts, Mrs. Kaefer said. Parakeet fad has since swept around world."
