Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Valley Times sponsored contest started on Flag Day, June 14, 1964, at the corner of Parthenia Street and Van Nuys Boulevard, Panorama City, in a Hughes Market parking lot. Robert LeMaire ascended forty feet up a flagpole to a specially built platform where he remained for 36 days before climbing back down on July 20, 1964. Photograph caption dated June 18, 1964 reads, "Robert LeMaire, Valley Times flagpole sitter, celebrated his 39th birthday yesterday as well-wishers gathered below. A birthday cake was hoisted to LeMaire who has been on the pole four days, trying to break the 211-day, 9-hour record."
