Black and White photograph: Angel Island Chinese immigrant detention center, dormitory room interior. San Francisco Bay, San Francisco, California, June 24, 2003. From 1910 until 1945, Angel Island served as a detention center to facilitate the exclusion of the immigration of Chinese people under the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. The poem, carved into the wall of the dormitory room, is one of hopelessness and longing for China. (translation not avaiable.)
