Description
Set of 108 photographs of Tower Bridge, part of project HAER No. CA-73. Reproductions of original photographs of bridge construction done in 1934-1935 (originals with Dept. of Transportation).
Includes index: Photographs, written historical and descriptive data / report prepared by John W. Snyder, James Fisher. Photographs (1985) by Don Tateishi.
Sacramento River Bridge, also known as Tower Bridge and M Street Bridge (earlier bridge). Represents rare use of Streamlined Moderne architectural styling in lift bridge, major link in transcontinental highway U.S. 40. Added to National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Engineer/architect was Alfred Eichler, California Division of Highways. Built in 1934-36 to replace M Street Bridge. Bridge is steel through truss vertical lift span, and steel through truss and reinforced concrete and steel plate deck girder approach spans.
