Description
Photograph of an aerial view of the Plaza in Los Angeles looking from Fort Moore Hill, ca.1873 (no later than 1875). The anterior side of the Plaza Church ("Pueblo Church of Nuestra Señora de Reina de Los Angeles") can be seen at the left center of the frame, identifiable by its filigree-decorated bell tower, that stands at the right. A large well, approximately 20 feet in diameter and lipped by a guard rail, stands surrounded by a post-and-rail fence on the site of Los Angeles' first water-works in the square beyond the church. Homesteads spaced more widely apart can be seen among the trees past the plaza in the distance. The numbers 1 through 15 have been written as tags over specific sites in the photo.
