Caption printed on photo: "#302. Cal. St. cable cars above Kearny St." Text written under photo: "California St. at first operation [this would date the photo at 1878] of the California St. Cable R.R." View looking west up California from Kearny. California Street cable train at end-of-line turntable. Grip car has already been turned. Dummy is tilted upwards on table with steps to facilitate boarding. Another cable train is heading inbound toward turntable. Old St. Mary's is seen uphill on north side of California.
