Shows the monoplane, Southern Cross (Fokker FVIIb-3m NC1985), taking off from Oakland Air Port. Buildings and airplanes in background. Caption below the image reads: "Honolulu Islands to Suva (Fiji Islands) 3,138 miles. Suva to Brisbane (Austrialia) 1700 miles. Brisbane to Sydney, 500 miles. Total 7, 788 miles." 2009-0524. Southern Cross was Fokker trimotor flown by Australian aviators Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm with Americans Harry Lyon and James Warner as navigator and wireless operator. First transpacific flight, they flew from Oakland, California to Sydney, Australia.
