Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes
Photograph caption dated November 10, 1960 reads, "Cellist Kristin A. Carlson, Sherman Oaks, reflects various moods of music during Youth Symphony selection." The article partially reads, "The musicians, no less than the conductor, were exhausted when the conclusion of Prokofiev's 'Peter and The Wolf' was finally reached. But this is the way all rehearsals go for the American Youth Symphony Orchestra...The 80 musicians, almost all students, are between the ages of 11 and 23. And each of them pay $60 a year for the privilege of belonging to the orchestra and having conductor Leo G. Damiani ridicule mistakes, shout at ineptitude, and condemn any youthful high jinks...But such disclipinary [sic] action is rarely required. The youngsters had to go through stiff auditions to get in the orchestra and they all have good reasons for wanting to stay in...Kristin A. Carlson, 16, 3899 Ventura Canyon Ave., Sherman Oaks, has too many other extracurricular activities to join her school orchestra. The youth symphony consequently, provides her only chance to play the cello in a musical group."; See images #00117565 through #00117568 for all photos in this series.
