Description
Breathing its last breath on July 3, 2003, is the Comstock Building at Eighth and J streets. The three-story building was constructed in 1861 by Leland Stanford and sold to burgeoning Sacramento businessman and native-Austrian Anthony Coolot. He opened the building as a variety store, enabling him to amass a fortune of $1.5 million to $2 million at the time of his death in 1900. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
