Description
Breathing its last breath on July 3, 2003, is the Comstock Building at Eighth and J Streets. The three-story building was constructed in 1861 by Leland Stanford and sold to burgeoning Sacramento businessman and native-Austrian Anthony Coolot. He opened the building as a variety store, enabling him to emass a fortune of 1.5 to 2 million dollars at the time of his death in 1900. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
