Description
Photograph of a drawing by Alexander Forbes (Capt. Wm. Smythe, R.N.?) depicting a California Indian, 1839. The Indian is wearing a straw-top hat and a crude tunic that goes down to his knees. His arms are crossed over his chest, and he is holding a bow and an arrow in one hand. Slung over his back is a backpack of sorts, and on it is a quiver of arrows and other packages. He has a small patterned bag around his waist and is wearing sandals on his feet. "Another drawing by William Smythe who was with Beechey on the 'Blossom' visiting California and Mexico in the 1820s -- published by A. Forbes in 1839 as a California Indian -- but not" -- S. Hecheuda 1/24/1995
