Description
City Hall is a Goodhue-esque structure with classical detailing at the base (Greek freize main entrance, in Roman arcade), with a moderne campanile-like tower influenced by Ziggurat construction. It is of steel frame clad in granite-pattern terra cotta, on a California granite base. It was the tallest building in Los Angeles, by law, until the 1950s. Associated architects were: John C. Austin, John and Donald Parkinson, and Albert C. Martin. It was built from 1926-18.
A stunt man dressed as a golfer and holding a golf club teeters on a bare girder of the present L.A. City Hall during its construction. The Hall of Justice appears very clearly behind him.
