Description
The first edition was published in 1862. It was immediately popular and by the time of the publication of the eighth edition in March of 1875, 10,000 copies had been sold. In 1879 when the ninth edition was published, the full effects of Phylloxera Vastatrix were being felt in the world's vineyards. The author's suggested solution was that all affected vines, and a margin of healthy ones around the healthy be destroyed and the land replanted with wheat and other crops 'until the roots of the vines have died and the insects with them...Nothing short of this will meet the case.' Fortunately for the iwne lover, a less drastic solution was found in American rootstock. from Gabler, Wine into Words. In the tenth edition (1903) this drastic advice is repeated.
