The Warner Grand Theater, an art-deco theater designed by architect B. Marcus Priteca and interior designer A.T. Heinsbergen, opened on January 20, 1931 in San Pedro. Ian Ruskin, founder of the Harry Bridges Project, stands under the marquee of the Warner Grand Theater on 6th Street prior to performing his one man play, "From Wharf Rats to Lords of the Docks", which he produced, wrote, and narrated based on the life of Harry Bridges. Ruskin is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and has worked extensively in theater, television and film. Harry Bridges was an influential American labor leader in the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), becoming president in 1935, a post he would hold for forty years. Bridges died in 1990 at the age of 89 years old. The Governor of California declared July 28, 2001 as "Harry Bridges Day" in honor of Bridges' 100th birthday. On that same day, San Pedro also celebrated Bridges' 100th birthday. The street was closed for a vintage car rally and Harbor Art Walk, which portrayed the ILWU's history. Photograph dated July 2001.
