(SIDE 1) SCHMIDT, Rev. Walter, S. J. Jesuit Residence, University of Santa Clara, 984-4242. Currently senior vice president at the university, Fr. Schmidt is the founder and current director of the Santa Clara Youth Village, Inc. July 17, 1974. Organizing a youth group (Forties). Effects of World War II on youth: draft separates them from older boys, war boom separates them from working parents. Recreational opportunities (1943). Setting up a club: university students versus neighborhood children, mixing the haves and the have-nots in the club. The old Sodality Hall as a headquarters. Club activities set up: dramatics, boxing. Youth gangs (Forties): Santa Clara kids versus Sunnyvale kids versus Milpitas kids. Organization of a city recreation department (post-World War II). Need for money for youth village: fire safety improvements required, organizing the first benefit theatre show (1947), show’s effect on kids’ self-esteem. Track: reasons for beginning it at the village, a helping hand from San Jose State, trips to the Olympics, proliferation of other track clubs in the meantime, village’s withdrawal from track. Gymnastics: reason for starting, growth of facilities. Effect of Vietnam War on membership. Senior Citizens’ Center: beginnings, activities. Effect of village on juvenile delinquency: when the club began, subsequent testimonials and self-esteem. Growth in recreational facilities (since 1943): dances, school recreation, the Recreation Department, PAL, little league, the Senior Citizens’ Center, International Swim Center. Length—29 minutes. (SIDE 2) VENNUM, Gene. 13140 Pfeifle Street, San Jose, 227-7748. Mr. Vennum is one of the historical commissioners for the county. He owns an extensive (20,000+) slide collection, including a number relating to the city of Santa Clara. The interview was based on a lecture regarding his Santa Clara slides. July 18, 1974. Streetcar system. Mission City High School. The Mission fire. Horse cars and electric streetcars. Local historians. PM Mill and the Earthquake (s) of 1906. The Methodist Church: various people, including a floral funeral (turn of the century?). Block Company. Paved streets. Maps of Santa Clara. Patriotism in Santa Clara. The town in 1914. “Going all out” in civic celebrations. Harmonious ethnic relations. The town fiestas. Penetencia Creek as site of a joint retreat between the Mission Fathers of Mission Santa Clara and Mission San Jose. Santa Clara College baseball (1904), local leagues. Other maps: comment on the Thompson and West surveys of 1876. Mission era controversy over the Calaveras Creek. “Flower consciousness” in the city today. The public plaza bandstand: its importance. Fr. Ricard: reputation among the area farmers as a weather forecaster. Annexation movements by Santa Clara and other major valley cities. Cook’s Pond. Length—55 minutes.
