Description
”Aneityum [Anatom] - Station at Anami, on the other side of the island from Anelcauhat. Dr. Inglis laboured at Anami. Aneityum is the most southern island of the New Hebrides, and is about 35 miles round, with mountains 3000 feet high. When Dr. Geddie settled on the island of Aneityum in 1848, the natives, with a few exceptions, were all heathen. When Dr. Inglis arrived in 1852, there were about 400 Christians. When he left in 1859, the whole 3500 professed Christianity.” Exterior view of Aneityum mission station, centre right, from a distant raised point. John Geddie [Canadian Church] pioneered the station in 1848 and over a hundred converts were made by 1853. John Inglis (1808-1891) and his wife joined him in 1853. They were commissioned by the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland which was acting on the advice of Alexander Duff (1806-1878) that they should become a missionary Church.
