Description
View showing a village shaman performing a ritual, he wears animal skins and has a large ostrich feather placed in a hat. The shaman inserts a long stick into a man’s mouth. ❧ The Tumutumu field administered to the Chuka and Mwimbi tribes, two sections of the Kikuyu people, and the individuals represented may be Chuka. ❧ Tumutumu was established in 1908 by Rev. Henry Scott and Dr. John Arthur and is situated in the Central Highlands of Kenya, 130km north of Nairobi. The mission was set up as a clinic but soon expanded to include a school and church serving the Kikuyu population indigenous to the region. Arthur Ruffelle Barlow (1888-1965), the nephew of David Clement Ruffelle Scott (1853-1907) and co-editor of the first Kikuyu – English Dictionary, was the first resident missionary at Tumutumu. ❧ This image belongs to an album of photographs collected by Dr. Stevenson and includes images from India, China and Africa.
