Description
A bust-length circular studio portrait of Mrs. Helen Daniels Stone, wife of Israel Stone of the 1st Illinois Light Artillery Regiment, turned very slightly to the left. Her hair is parted in the center, reaching just below her chin, and she is wearing a dark dress with a narrow white collar. The photograph is mounted in a wooden screwtop case, with a painted gold frame around the image
Israel Stone enlisted in 1862 from Illinois -- Battery "M" 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteers Light Artillery. Fought at Chickamauga and served in Chattanooga during the siege. In defense of Chattanooga Oct. 1863 was dangerously wounded in left leg, which was amputated. Honorably discharged in 1864. This was the image that he took with him to the front.
