Description
Photograph of a sketch depicting the city of San Francisco, looking towards Telegraph Hill, 1849. Clusters of houses and buildings occupy the land mostly between the mountains and near to the bay. A long road cuts through the town. Horseback riders and people are traveling along this road and several other visible streets. A camp with two large tents and a campfire is set up on the hill in the foreground at right. People are wandering around the camp area. In the background at right, numerous ships are anchored or traveling in the bay. In the background at center, Telegraph Hill stands prominently above the city. Another mountain can be seen in the extreme background at left.
