Description
Photograph of a settlement consisting of several thatched round huts surrounded by mud walls.
Handwriting on the back reading: "Dies ist ein typisches Bild einer Eingeborenen-‚Stadt’. ("This is the typical picture of an indigenous 'town'. The blacks live in round huts surrounded by a 1 1/4 m high mud wall. The space between round hut and mud wall is well flattened and serves as dwelling place of the inhabitants. Here the millet seed is cleaned and ground. This is done as follows: the well dried millet seed lies on a mat. The women and girls are knelt down beside a big flat stone, where they put the millet and grind it with smaller hand stones. To the left on the picture a round walled place is visible: a cattle kraal. Cattle is the wealth of the blacks. Mutoredi? - my station - is inhabited by ca. 1700 persons, but it has 2100 heads of cattle (bulls, oxen, cows and calfs.) A black rarely sells cattle, he rather dies.")
