Description
"Fig tree under which the pioneer mission band halted on 13th October, 1876 ." Exterior view showing two males, a European and an Africa standing in front of a large fig tree, there is a dog lying at their feet. A brick building, Blantyre Church, can be seen through the vegetation to the right of the image. On the 23rd October 1876 the initial mission party camped at this site, and this date was accepted as the founding date of the Blantyre mission. The site was found by Henry Henderson, son of a minister from Kinclaven, Perthshire, and part of the pioneer missionary group sent out by the Free Church mission and the Church of Scotland mission in 1875. ❧ From a Photograph Album of the Blantyre Mission, Nyasaland [Malawi] and the Mihecani Mission, Portuguese East Africa [Mozambique].
