Description
197 Corte Madera Avenue at Winwood Place. The property was purchased in 1906 by Donna Cole from the Girard Smith family. The home was saved in the 1929 fire by friends and neighbors. An elevated stairway leading to the house above can be seen behind the gate, which is flanked by trees and hedges. After visiting Japan and developing an appreciation for Japanese architecture, Cole hired Japanese craftsmen to travel to her home and build a torii gate (commonly built at the entrance to Shinto temples). In the 1980s the homeowner renovated the gate, which was rotting. The red gate still stands in front of the home today.
