Description
Scope/Content: Dr. Jay Levy's thesis as a medical student at Columbia University.
Biography/History: In 1962, as a medical student, Dr. Levy volunteered to join the laboratory of Dr. Herbert Rosenkranz to study a -state in bacteria called lysogeny, in which viruses silently infect bacteria and affect their function. That appeared to be a good model for silent cancer viruses. That research led to his discovery that the recently developed chemical drug hydroxyurea (HU) was unique in blocking DNA synthesis but not RNA synthesis. Lysogenic bacteria grown in the presence of HU became larger without any significant effect on their biological state. This observation, a sideline to the effect of viruses in lysogeny, did not show any effect on the virus in the bacteria.
