Description
Photograph of an exterior view of the asistencia of the Mission San Miguel Arcangel in disrepair, ca.1900. The long, one-story adobe building is shown extending away from the foreground from left to right. Several of the wooden support beams that hold up the overhang of the terracotta-tiled roof are leaning, while the spackle on the exterior walls has been worn away in many areas giving the building a speckled finish. Wooden doors and a barred window are spaced evenly down the front of the building. Rubble and other debris from the patio litter the grass in front of the building. The picture file card locates the building "At Templeton near Paso Robles, on the J.H. Blackburn Ranch".
An asistencia is defined as an outlying mission station which contained a chapel but no resident priest. However, other priest would often visit in order to say mass and conduct other services. It was often planned that asistencias were to later become full missions in their own right.
