Description
Photograph of a painting by Vischer of a rear view of the ruins of Mission San Juan Capistrano (following the destruction of the church by earthquake in 1812), California, 1876. Caption partially reads: "In memory of R. Fray José Maria de Zalvidea, our leavetaking in Nov. 1842". In the foreground, a group of three men prepare to leave the Mission (founded 1776) by horse as one man shakes hands with a monk, another waits on horseback, and another holds the first man's horse. Three or four people, at left, watch the farewell. Another man on horseback chases three wild horses at right. In the background are a small building with a thatched roof, part of an aqueduct and the ruins of the church.
