Description
This circa-1935 photo shows a support structure for the Bell Conservatory Company at 931 Broadway. This longstanding spot for horticultural research and supplier of floral goods in Sacramento dated back to 1878 and covered 6 acres. The business saw its most fruitful days under the ownership of the Geisreiter family, particularly Hubert who, with a degree in landscape architecture from the University of California, was able to develop a collection of more than 40 different orchids. He was also mayor of Sacramento in 1950/51. The Conservatory was razed in 1955 to make way for a Safeway supermarket.
