Johannes G. Andersen (1922-2005). Gennem anden halvdel af det 20. århundrede har Johs. G. og Karen Andersens liv været koncentreret om udviklingen af spedalskhedsbehandling i Asien og Afrika, med specielt fokus på rehabilitering via rekonstruktiv kirurgi og genoptræning. Det begyndte i Sevapur, Assam, Indien, 1953-58, og senere i Purulia, West Bengal, samt Nepal, 1962-67. I 1970erne gik nogle år med videreuddannelse i Sydindien, samt med undervisning og specialkirurgi i Tanzania, Kenya og Uganda. Herefter ansættelse som konsulent i Danida, samt af Spedalskheds-missionen. I 1977-84 var Johs. G. leder af Spedalskhedscentret ALERT, Addis Abeba, Etiopien, med uddannelse af medicinsk personale fra hele kontinentet, i behandling og rehabilitering af spedalske. Og engagementet fortsatte efter pensionering, bl.a. med et ophold i Nilphamari, Bangladesh, udsendt af Danida/Spedalskhedsmissionen. (Foto 1987)

Nurse and Missionary, Karen Andersen (1922-2012), born in Benagaria, North India, as daughter of the missionary couple, BM Boe Bojesen Bøgh and Teacher Helga Bøgh. Married to Leprosy Surgeon Johannes G. Andersen (1922-2005). During the second half of the 20th Century, the lives of Johs. G. and Karen Andersen were concentrated on development of the leprosy treatment in Asia and Africa, with particular focus on reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation. The work started in Sevapur, Assam, North India 1953-58, later Purulia, West Bengal and Nepal, 1962-67. After further education in South India, the work continued with education and special surgery in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. This followed by appointment as consultant of Danida and employment by the Leprosy Mission, 1977-84 as head of the Leprosy Centre ALERT, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with education in leprosy and rehabilitation to medical personel from all over Africa. Also after retirement the commitment continued, including a period at Nilphamari, Bangladesh, sent by Danida and the Leprosy Mission (Photo 1987).
